My family fought the construction of the Niagara Power Project in the late 1950's, which condemned Tuscarora land after a US Supreme Court ruling in 1961. Nation citizens lost their homes and access to the Lower Niagara, where we had been spear fishing sturgeon, blue pike and walleye. Though my father and his uncles lost their family farm to the project, they still took me there as a boy and re-established our relationship to the River. I have been spear fishing the river ever since. "A:we awe: te?" meaning Water is Life!
