I was born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario, a city with 330 lakes including Lake Wanapitae, the largest lake contained within a city’s limits in the world. Of course, growing up, these lakes played a huge role in my life. My childhood home was within walking distance of Ramsey Lake, a beautiful lake with a public beach and park. When I was a child, every summer night after supper my mother, grandmother and I would walk down to the lake and swim until it got dark and cold, usually 8 or 9 o’clock.
So many other families did the same thing, and it was a fun, free way for people to spend time together and enjoy the city. I can’t imagine living in a city without access to clean, safe lakes for recreation since it was such a big part of my life and the lives of so many Sudburians.
