Lake Superior Provincial Park is a"Natural Environment" class park located near Wawa.
The park has 2 campgrounds with services for RVs and tents, 200 backcountry campsites, 3 day-use areas, 11 hiking trails, and 8 canoe routes.
Old Woman Bay beach, overlooking stunning 400-foot cliffs, is located just off Highway 17, about 2 hours and 15 minutes north of Sault Ste.
Marie and 20 minutes south of Wawa.
This iconic Lake Superior bay is named for the profile of a woman’s face that can be seen in the cliffs along the south shore.
Picnic tables are available to enjoy lunch by the beach.
The Old Woman River, located at the south end of the beach, is a popular fishing spot(license required) and the moderately demanding 5km Nokomis Trail, located just across the highway, offers breathtaking views over the bay.
A few things to keep in mind when visiting:- A permit is required to park at Old Woman Bay from early May to mid-October.
Day-use permits can be obtained at the Visitor Centre(Agawa Bay) if travelling from Sault Ste.
Marie, or the Park Office(Red Rock Lake) or Rabbit Blanket Lake Campground Gatehouse if travelling from Wawa.
Life jackets are also available for loan at these locations.- Dogs are permitted on the beach only within the designated Pet Exercise Area at the northern end of the Old Woman Bay and must be kept on a leash not exceeding 2 meters at all times.- The waters of Lake Superior can be quite cold, particularly in early summer, and there may be powerful waves on windy days.
There are no lifeguards on site – water safety is your responsibility.- Be mindful of the fragile beach vegetation growing at this site and keep in mind that removing natural materials from provincial parks is prohibited.
