This is perhaps one of the most environmentally and culturally significant parks in Ontario and globally, being in the world’s biggest wildlife preserve. Set in the Chapleau Crown Game preserve, this Provincial Park helps protect the ecology of the Missinaibi River and surrounding area. This truly wild river flows north over 500 km of land into the open waters of James Bay. It is also a Canadian Heritage River that holds meaningful cultural features for Aboriginal peoples, the fur trade, and the logging era. The park contains large lakes, stunning waterfalls, and whitewater paddling routes. At the Fairy Point site on the Missinaibi Lake, there are over 100 Aboriginal pictographs conserved, making it one of the largest sites in Ontario. Fairy point is named after playful beings, said to live in the cracks along the vertical rock face. In addition to the cultural features, the recreational opportunities in the area are unmatched. Some of the best and most unique backcountry paddling routes run through this park, along the hundreds of kilometers of the Missinaibi River.
