Lane Beach

Beach

The George A. Lane Beach was renamed from Thorndale beach in 1975 in honour of George A. Lane, a 50 year Chicago lawyer and community member active in church-civic relations, politics and philanthropy. The beach is located in the Edgewater area of Chicago and is part of the 7 miles (11km) of connected beaches in this area of Chicago. The beach has a wheelchair accessible walk and long distance swimming. Parking is limited to street parking.

The Chicago Park District manages and grooms beaches, including Lane Beach, on a daily basis. Beaches are open 6am to 11pm daily, but swimming is only permitted when lifeguards are on duty from 11am to 7pm each day.

While Lane Beach is currently not monitored for water quality, the Chicago Park District Department of Cultural and Natural Resources does report water quality sample results from the nearby beach, Osterman Beach, which is within 200-350 yards along the same shoreline. On the Chicago Park District website, the status, swim advisories and swim bans for Lane Beach are posted online based on Osterman Beach sample results. You can find these and other details on their webpage, at https://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/parks-facilities/beaches.
