Wainfleet Wetlands Conservation Area

Park

Wainfleet Wetlands Conservation Area is a vast 442 acre site protecting critical fish and wildlife habitat alongside a unique historic, rocky region. The area was once submerged in a warm, shallow sea an estimated 450-300 million years ago! Fossils of ancient Paleozoic plant and animal species can be seen in the exposed limestone rock throughout the site. In the19th century the region was used as a clay and limestone quarry, exposing much of the rocks that can be seen throughout the park today. Woodlots, meadows, and alvar communities (rock-loving plants) have flourished in the region, providing the perfect habitat for a variety of fish, birds, reptile, and amphibian species. Wainfleet Wetlands Conservation Area has also earned the Bronze Plaque Award for quarry rehabilitation. Stop by to test out your inner archaeologist and explore this one-of-a-kind park!
