Canoeing is a very popular activity in the Great Lakes region. While it was traditionally a method of transportation by First Nations peoples, it continues to form an integral part of life in the Great Lakes. Canoeing allows you to explore the lakes at your own pace and from a unique and relaxing perspective. Not only is it renowned for its meditative benefits, but it can be an exhilarating form of exercise, depending on where you choose to paddle! Whether you are exploring the extensive island system of Lake Huron, or challenging yourself to the great waves of Lake Superior, you are sure to have an incredible adventure canoeing on the Great Lakes.

The Madawaska is a perfect place to canoe as it doesn't get choppy and there aren't a prevalence of rapids. Soloing the river, still to this day, instills me with a calming feeling of confidence and strength. Canoeing also creates a connection between myself and the river, as there is no sound or speed to block out my beautiful surroundings. You are able to hear and see every detail: the snapping turtles lurking in the marsh, schools of minnows and the many sounds of songbirds.
